511 is Louisiana's official, easy-to-remember traveler information service. 511 provides continual updates about weather-related road conditions, road work, commercial vehicle restrictions, road closures and other travel information via the phone, Internet or free downloadable mobile app.
On the phone, simply dial 511. You will be connected to a computerized voice recognition system. The system will offer voice response and/or touch-tone options to request road-specific information. This is available on any landline telephone or mobile phone.
On the Web, find Louisiana traveler information at 511la.org.
On your iOS and/or Android smart phone, download the free app for real-time traveler information.
Information is available anytime - 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
511 is a public service of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development . Calls to 511 are considered local when dialed from landline phone.
Cell phone users are responsible for normal airtime and roaming charges in accordance with their wireless service contracts. LADOTD encourages motorists to pull off the road and park in a safe area before using cell phones.
Pay phone users are responsible for the local call fee.
511 is a statewide service and provides information on the interstates, U.S. routes and state highways within the state of Louisiana. It does not include parish roads or city streets.
While users can see congestion information on highways throughout and outside of Louisiana, detailed routing is only supported within state lines. If a user creates a route that includes highways outside of Louisiana state lines and runs into Mississippi, Texas, or Arkansas, the detailed routing steps will not include the portion of highway outside of state lines. Instead, the detailed routing will provide step by step directions only for those portions of the route that lie inside the state. The full route, however, will be displayed on the map.

If 511 service is not available through your landline or wireless carrier, you may still call 888-ROAD511 (888-762-3511). The 888 number can also be used when calling from neighboring states.
911 is used to report emergencies and/or the need for police or medical attention. 511 is a traveler information number.
511 is another information source for travelers that complements radio and television broadcasts. It is coded for specific routes the caller is interested in; this kind of user-specific information is not given over broadcast media.

The intent is for all 511 systems to provide similar types of information; however, there may be some differences in format from one system to the next.
